Introduction

Awesome! (In the voice of a ninja turtle, of course. :-) I will try to be more objective in the rest of the review but it will not be easy.

I chose the RJGR6076C (60" range, natural gas, 5 high output burners, 1 simmer burner, 1 wok burner, 1 charbroiler grill, 2 30" convection ovens w/ broilers) with the high shelf.

Equipment review

This is just a review of the range and the high shelf. The hood, exhaust fan, and make-up air units will be covered in other reviews.

The burner grates are cast iron and have a 2" gap between the top edges of the grates. Pots slide easily across the grates. The simmer burner is in the back right hand corner of the range top. The 1k-15k BTU burners are easy to control and quick to light. The 500-10k simmer burner has not had much use yet, but I expect it will come in handy for turkey stock in a few weeks.

The wok burner comes with a 14" wok, wok ring, and an extra cast iron grate (shown above). The charbroiler grill is between the wok burner and the 4 burners pictured above. The wok ring works great with my 18" wok and my 24" wok works okay. Other than seasoning, I have not used the 14" wok.

The ovens hold half sheet pans comfortably. The oven racks are on bearings so even loaded down with 50 lbs. of stone and cast iron they can be slid in/out with little effort. The convection fans in each oven can be used independently. Only one light switch for both ovens.

There is a small hot spot in the bottom edge between the ovens - I had to rotate a pan of biscuits baked on the bottom shelf. Baking on the middle and top shelves was not affected. With the convection fans on there were no discernable hot spots. The ovens fully pre-heat to 400F in about 15 minutes. Empty they hold 395F to 405F when set to 400F.

The broiler element is really hot. The entire ceramic surface heats. I put in a plate of simple nachos (chips & cheese) about 6" down from the broiler, turned away to wash a knife, turned back to check and the cheese was all melted and the top chips were almost burned. I will definitely have to adjust my broiling recipes.

The controls are large and stable. The nobs are attached to metal, not plastic, rods. You will not have to worry about running into them with a heavy cast iron pan or having your children snap them off when playing with the nobs.

What are the things that I would change if I could? Not much yet:

- The stove only goes to 36" high. I am not that tall and I have my counter tops at 37" so I had to build up an extra inch under the legs. It would be nice if there were a few extenders (1/4", 1/2", & 1") that could be attached to the legs to get the stove up a bit higher.

- The tall venting shelf vents the entire width of the range. It would be nice if there were some stainless caps to block off 2" to 3" at the sides. I folded up a couple of vent caps out of several layers of foil.

I have only used the range a couple of weeks so far. It is amazingly fun to be back on a decent range again - I have not had access to one outside of a few church functions for a long time.
