A week of bachelor food
Submitted by dave on Mon, 2007-06-18 12:35.
Laurie is off at a conference in Wisconsin this week, so it's time for meat and cheese dishes. Last night it started with Italian sausage sandwiches, and this afternoon, I'm making my latest incarnation of the garlic burger. I think I'll do a Mongolian beef or lamb tonight.
Not that I don't love the food that Laurie and I share when she's around, but sometimes I just need to revert to the old unhealth food.
What else to make? Chili is an option that I haven't made for a while, but I'm incapable of making a reasonable amount, even though I'm the only person that will be eating it. I'm going to have to make at least one ham dish, but I haven't decided what yet.
Any suggestions?

A ham dish that I like to
A ham dish that I like to make when I get to be in bachelor mode (which for me starts next Tuesday and lasts for two weeks) is just to fry up a ham steak, make some pan gravy, and serve it up with fried eggs and potatoes. But if you are going to smoke a whole ham, then I would just go for a nice ham hash and a bean soup with ham stock. After you get your fill of straight ham slices of course.
While smoking a whole ham
While smoking a whole ham (or half) is mighty appealing, I'm not going to do that this week, I'm going for smoked ham steaks from the butcher. Ham hash sounds like it might make it into the menu. I sure don't want to cook up a ham stock in the summer anyway.
But a soup with ham in it might be good, maybe even a ham curry soup.
I was looking at some nicely priced turkeys last night. It might be worth buying one and a few extra thighs to smoke up and freeze for burrito and soup fixins. After eating my fill of turkey slices of course.
Mom is going to move up here in a couple of years, when she does, we'll bring the big smoker up and have some serious fun.
