Since my girlfriend went back in Pennsylvania for Christmas, I decided to accept portlandpiper's invitation to share Christmas with him and his wife. Of course it was a very foodie Christmas.

Our Christmas Eve dinner was homemade pizza. There was some good sourdough wheat crust with a baked tomato and chile sauce that he made with the surplus from his CSA share. A variety of cheeses and some good organic veggies and meats rounded things out nicely.

On Christmas morn, we made scrambled eggs with leftover toppings from the pizza, and roasted taters with more leftover toppings. Once again it was yummy and filling. There was also some bacon, but I overcooked it a little bit. The deli cut it a lot thinner than I'm used to getting from Oakland Bay, and by the time it looked right on the outside to me, it was overdone.

Christmas supper was a leg of lamb, studded with garlic cloves (from my garden) with a dry rub and garlic paste over the outside. We seared it, then cooked it over chopped root veggies in a roasting pan in the oven. It came out of the oven tender and perfect. We put in a tinly bit of arrowroot to thicken the sauce a tiny bit. Then we served it up with roast sweet potatoes and sauteed veggies.

Of course, our presents to each other were also food related, I brought down a couple of pork chops and a piece of tri-tip from Oakland Bay, and they got me the book Cradle of Flavor about home cooking in the spice islands. It looks like there are some good, fun recipes in it.

When I was driving through Tumwater on the way home, I spotted a sign that I had never noticed before for a "Tortilla Factory"! I drove out yesterday to check it out, and I found Ramirez Mexican Store and Tortilla Factory. Most of the Mexican stores in the area are the equivalent of mini-marts, concentrating on junk food and a few spices. While Ramirez Mexican store is small, it has much more concentration on real food instead of junk foods. This small store also contains a taqueria, with some really decent tacos. Their homemade tortillas (and tortilla chips) are really good.
