orange sugar syrup

This simple orange sugar syrup is really nice on whole wheat cocoa cinnamon pancakes. (Guess what we had for breakfast this morning.)

  • microplane grater
  • cutting board & knife
  • juicer
  • small saucier
  • whisk
  • liquid & dry measuring cups

Ingredients

  • Equal parts fresh squeezed orange juice, water, and sugar (white or brown); plus a pinch of salt.
  • Minced zest the from the juiced oranges.
Cooking Instructions
  • Remove zest from oranges and then slice and juice the oranges.
  • Add juice, water, sugar, and salt to the saucier and whisk over medium-low heat until the sugar dissolves.
  • Cook over medium-low heat until syrup reduces by about 1/3.
  • Stir in minced zest and cook over low heat for another 10 minutes.

For the orange sugar syrup, combine the sugar and water in a small pan, stir over a low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Bring the mixture to the boil, then add the rind and juice. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes or until reduced to ½ cup (125ml).
